100 years of Making Science and Invention Cool

Tour: Friday, July 16, 2010

We will meet at the conference hotel in the morning. We will have a tour bus to take us to Balboa Park, our first stop.

Balboa Park was the site of the 1915 Panama-California Exhibition. It is a large park, San Diego's equivalent of Central Park, which also contains a large museum complex. Edward Stratemeyer, the creator of Tom Swift, visited the exhibition in July of 1915. We are following in his footsteps by visiting both the Park complex and the hotel where he was staying, the famous Victorian hotel, the Hotel Del Coronado.

At Balboa Park there will be time to take a short walking tour and visit two museums for tours: The San Diego Air & Space Museum and the San Diego Automotive Museum. These both contain artifacts of interest to Tom Swift fans.

Lunch will be included as part of the price with the tour.

After the park, we will take the bus to Coronado, seeing historical cottages and sites along the way, including the cottage where L. Frank Baum wrote some of the Oz books. Then it is on to the Hotel Del Coronado. We'll have time to see the lobby and examine the beach area. We are hoping to arrange a historical tour of the building, including information about their mysterious ghost.

After we leave the hotel, we will visit the Geisel Library at UCSD. In addition to a wonderful collection of rare Dr. Seuss artifacts, the Library is also sponsoring a two month exhibit of Tom Swift. You will have time to examine both exhibits.

There will also be a short performance--based on Tom Swift, Jr. There will be a live performance of a radio drama showing the exploits of Tom Swift Junior, complete with professional actors and a sound effects person. You might even be asked to help with sound effects!

The bus will return you to the hotel in time for you to eat dinner (not included).

More details on the bus tour will be added as they are arranged.

Seating is limited. Be sure to reserve your spot early. There will be no reservations taken the day of the tour. You must reserve your seat in advance.
